concept driving the design was to create a beautiful small garden that increases the footprint of the lower paving area to create a sense of heart and home in the landscape design, opening up the possibility of dining with family and friends outside. One key constraint for this small garden was its different levels, dividing the space into upper and lower zones. The client wanted to keep this natural division with the idea of maximising space at the lower level so it could be an entertainment zone, whilst keeping the upper level more for personal relaxation.
Over 40 tonnes of concrete, rubble and soil were dug out to create more space in the lower zone. This involved a strong team as everything was moved through the small terraced house by hand. To mark the boundary and to ensure the upper section did not move over time, a circular brick retaining wall was built. By centering the curve of the wall on the back door of the house, the design of the backyard feels psychologically complete and cohesive as soon as you open the door and step into the space.
In the upper section of the garden, a continuation of already established themes were carried through, with brick planters and a circular paving motif. Contrasting counterpoints to the back yard design include the use of cedar in both trellis and shiplap shed.
I count myself as extremely fortunate to have used the services of Duncan and his wonderful team. Duncan listened to my 'dream' of what I had in mind and somehow he was able to untangle my thoughts and create the reality! Duncan, Jack and Dan were fantastic. Punctual, tidy, always considerate, thoughtful and totally professional. The workmanship is exemplary. Living in a small terraced house the work was difficult for them and for me but they were brilliant at being positive and encouraging. These days it's not easy to find a business that does exactly as they've set out to do from start to finish. With such a stunning end result I couldn't be happier.— Juliet, Dalston E8
plants, garden furniture and ornaments that helped add colours, textures and interest to the landscaped elements, combining to create a small but beautiful garden with a real sense of home integrated into the landscape design.
The final detail in the upper back yard design considers the fall of light. A low triangular pergola festooned with wisteria catches the last of the evening sun. When paired with the meditative trickle of a nearby water feature, this suntrap corner beneath the pergola helps extend the seasons and bathes this beautiful small garden in a sense of serenity.
I cannot exaggerate how pleased we were with the final result: it blended in the home office, incorporated all the elements we required, and at the same time enhanced the sense of space within the garden. Duncan & Jane, Clapton E5
